The American Revolution was fueled by ideas and in the 18th century, a revolution in scientific thinking was unfolding alongside the political one.

At Heritage Day, historical interpreter Michael Carver brings to life the world of the Gentleman Scientist. The curious amateur investigators whose tinkering, experimenting, and writing helped lay the foundation for modern science. Enlightenment science encouraged a focus on direct observation, inquiry, and experimentation, the idea that the world operates according to discoverable natural laws within the grasp of any thoughtful person.

Michael’s demonstrations draw on the “Big Science” of the era, including electricity experiments using a Hauksbee Generator and Leyden Jar to demonstrate the creation and storage of “electric fire”. He also explores how 18th-century scientists tackled the measurement of longitude, proved the Earth’s rotation, and used the Transit of Venus to determine the size of the solar system — all with crude instruments and remarkably clever reasoning.

It’s hands on, mind expanding, and genuinely fun. A side of the founding era you don’t often get to see. Come ask questions, watch a demonstration, and meet the scientists who helped shape the world we live in today.
